March 23-25: Scottsdale AZ to Las Cruces NM

Kathy here:  We sadly left Scottsdale at a little before 6 am on Monday. We volunteered to take Roy and Lavona to the airport on our way to Tucson and parts east.  We made the drive easily and early and delivered them to their flight.  After a stop at Denny's for a coffee and pancake infusion, we hit the 10 and flew at 80 mph to the outskirts of Tucson.  Our destination was La Posada Lodge and Casitas where we previously had enjoyed a lovely visit while traveling with Dennis and Laurie. We got there early and enjoyed the pool while we waited for our room to be ready.  As Jeff said, he could "feel the moss and algae disappear" as we baked in the sun and swam when we got hot.  We took a break for some enchiladas and a mojito for me and then went back to the shady side to write the blog.  Dinner at Hifalutin' and a hot fudge sundae closed out a wonderful day.

The next morning we took off for Las Cruces NM, our halfway stop to Carlsbad and the caverns.  We saw lots of desert complete with cacti and ocotillo, fireworks and souvenier stands, and a long way between bathrooms.  We stopped at a ghost town, Shakespeare that was closed (how do you close a ghost town?) and had lunch in Deming, then found our hotel and settled in for a nap after all that driving.  We found a delicious Italian dinner complete with gelato.  Tomorrow, on to Carlsbad, home of the cavern and also the largest underground nuclear storage facility in the world.
