The scent of Roses

I usually don't think it's all that great to read about the boring details of someone's day to day existence.  Like how you had a cold and the cough lasted for weeks or you had to spend a little more than expected on those car repairs or how that new roughage regimen is starting to work.......etc.  But there are some regular day to day's that rise above the usual.  Plus I took a whole bunch of pictures and need a place to put them.  So bear with me.

I am sitting writing this post on the "lanai" from the bouncy chair overlooking the garden in full display.  Our favorite radio station (KRVM...catch in online!) is on the "Magical  Mystery Tour" and Janice Joplin is singing "Bobby McGee".....the first song I ever learned to play on the guitar.  The scent of roses, fresh from a rain and warmed in the sun, along with the freshness of new mown grass wafts over me, pushed by the wind. My partner in crime has just served me a delicious lunch of PBand J washed down with milk and fig newtons for desert.  I solved the entire crossword. And the swallows are darting around caching bugs and making nests.  All the work and effort and difficulty of the winter seem to have vanished.  All would be perfect except for my left knee.  I'm sorry to break the lovely reverie with a medical departure, but I did say there would be some boring details....I'll make it short.

I hurt my left knee somehow.  It may have been the clutch on the riding mower, it could have been the extra gardening, powerwashing, shop vacuuming, cleaning etc that I did getting ready for the open house or it could be just an aging knee with an overweight owner in her 60's.  It was hurting for awhile when I went to the local N.P. got an x-ray and started physical therapy.

It got worse.  Maybe it was running after and tracking down kids at school and playground duty, maybe it was my gardening jones or maybe that outlet mall and rose garden visit with Ann and Carol.  Or maybe it was learning the East Coast Swing at dance class.  Anyway, at Jeff's urging I made an appointment at a sports medicine/orthopedic clinic.  It's famous for fixing UO football players so how bad could it be?  Well, long story short, they found inflamation, fluid and swelling. Jeff was there to hold my hand and boy did I need him.  I got a big needle stuck in my knee and they drew off fluid and injected two kinds of corticosteroids.

Then we went to a wedding!

Due to a series of unavoidable events (not pregnancy), Emily and Fred decided to get married on Friday, May 31.  So after work I prepared a bouquet and two bouteniers, changed clothes and Jeff and I (he of the all day running around, hand holding, and mowing duty) headed up the freeway to an obscure address in Salem for the ceremony.  It turned out to be a small house set up as a private chapel and it was perfect.

What a lovely and heart-warming celebration.  There wasn't a dry eye was they exchanged vows, hugged as a family and we all danced to "At Last".  Wow!  We took Ruben home with us for the night and Emily told us this morning that she was a little shocked to wake up this morning hungover with a ring on her finger!

Anyway, back to the lanai.  I am on light duty.  Jeff is running my errands and I have only been in the garden for four or five rounds of weed pulling, watering, deadheading and rearranging.  I really want to do more.......but Jeff will give me dirty looks and I do want to heal and now the radio is playing a song from my personal top 10.......Won't be Fooled Again by "The Who".  I guess I'll just sit here with ice on my knee and post pictures.

Back to Humbug: May 3,4 and 5

The weather report for the weekend was for hot weather.  Even on the Oregon Coast.  I was ready for a camping trip and my enthusiasm convinced Jeff.  We put the camper on the truck on Thursday and added the J and K Adventures decal that Robert and Betsy gave us for our wedding. It was a wonderful addition to the camper.

By Friday when I got off work we were ready to head down the road, with one addition to the usual items......this time we had to take Freddy with us.  It wasn't just our first camping trip of the year, it was Freddy's first camping trip ever!

Our ultimate destination was Humbug Mt. State park just south of Port Orford.  But it's a long way down the road and we were both exhausted.  As usual, we just went with the flow and with Jeff dozing in the seat beside me, I drove to Sunset Beach State park which is just south of Charleston.  We had spent a few wonderful afternoons on the protected beach there, but never tried the campground.  It was a lot closer than Humbug.  It was starting to get dark as we found a space with privacy that wasn't to far from the bathroom (and not far enough from the screaming children taking up residence in the yurt across the campground).  At any rate, hungry, tired, cold and frazzled, we put up the camper and I magically created a delicious meal in record time.  Jeff was so impressed, he even built a fire and we enjoyed a quiet evening after the "monsters" finally exhausted themselves and went to bed.  The hot weather hadn't arrived and I was glad we had lots of blankets.  How wonderful it was to sleep in our comfortable bed in the camper.

In the morning, we had a quick breakfast, grabbed a few last minute items (how could we have forgotten towells?) and just about noon, pulled into Humbug.  It was breezy, but warm.....a nice combination and we wasted no time putting together the camp, making sandwiches and heading for the beach.

The sand was so hot, we cooled our feet in the stream.
After our walk, we went back to camp to good ole space 49 to enjoy rest and relaxation.  Warm wind, hot sun, a crossword and a comfortable chair soothed our souls.  Before long it was naptime.  Then time for a hot shower.  For dinner, we had steaks over the open flame and asparagus and salad.  Love that camp cooking.  Then, another walk to the beach for the glorious sunset.  I have rarely in my life been able to sit on the beach at the Oregon coast at 8 pm without a coat.  It was amazingly balmy.

We found out it was best to put Freddy up on the bunk to keep him out of the way of the cook.

The next morning we took our time getting up and going.  After breakfast and putting everything away, we went up Hiway 101 and stopped at Floras Lake.  I convinced Jeff that we needed one more hike.

Hiking across the sand to the beach--tough going.

We made it!

Floras Lake is only a sand berm away from the ocean. Floras on the left, ocean on the right.

The ocean at Floras Lake has a deep booming sound.  The sand is different....coarse with lots of little pebbles.  We enjoyed the hike, but walking over the sand was difficult and by the time we got back to the truck we were really tired.  Time to drive home.  But what a wonderful trip we had.  Freddy's first camping trip was a success.

Spring Break/Birthday Get-away

Spring break arrived at last.  What a wonderful time of year.  You don't know what the weather will do day to day or minute to minute, but with the switch to daylight saving time and the start of blooming flowers in the garden, it is sweet reminder that summer is on it's way.  And Jeff's birthday is during spring break too.

Jeff and I started the week with a big project on Saturday.......incinerate the huge burn pile.  It was full of pruning and old foliage from last years flowers, along with a huge cherry branch that broke out of the tree and a fir that Neil cut down for us.  Add some stuff from the nursery that Robert works for and it was imposing.  And wet.  We optimistically stuffed some newspaper in a space between boughs branches of the dry Christmas tree and lit the match.  All we got was a brief sizzle and then smoke.  We tried more newspaper and then some paper bags.  Nothing.  Finally we cut some kindling from the wood for the fireplace and got a small fire started on one side.  Carefully, Jeff and I put little pieces of wood and grass and pruning on the flames and it got a little bigger but never really took off.  We were getting resigned to having a two day smoke out instead of a towering inferno when Neil showed up with his pickup full of an old fence and gate from his house.  We threw it on the fire and the whole thing went up like an Oregon forest in August.  Yay!  Now we took turns raking stuff into the fire and before long, the pile was halved, then quartered and finally just a small smoking volcano.  I ran to town for a cake, cooked hot dogs and spooned out potato salad and we all settled down to watch the Ducks take care of their second round opponent.  On to the Sweet Sixteen.  Candles, song, cake and ice cream put a nice end to the day.  On Sunday, I finished my pruning and weeding and put the last of the twigs on the still smoking fire and got the second mowing of the season done.  The grass is growing so fast and the weather has been so wet, its always a challenge to get ahead of it.

Smoke but no flames

Too wet to burn?

Neil arrives with dry wood reinforcements

A happy conclusion......flame on!!

On Monday,we were up by 7:00, S.S.S., packed and out the door by 8:30.  Down I- 5 to Grants Pass and down 199 to the coast.  A pleasant drive filled with conversation, music, munchies and a fair amount of chuckles.  We both felt stress relief as the miles piled up separating us from the cares of adulthood.  The Redwoods towered over us and we decided that Jedediah Smith State Park is on our short list of places to visit and maybe to camp.

We finally pulled up to Lowden's Beachfront B and B.  It was a big 60's style house with lots of decks and balconies facing south. We met the owner, Barbara and she showed us to our room.  It had a nice big living room with a view of the Winchuck River flowing into the sea.  There was a huge bathroom and bedroom and a sliding door facing east with our own balcony .  It was nice, cozy and the view was amazing.   We had a little fridge and kitchen area (though without a sink).  Jeff and I wasted no time getting the luggage and settling in, then went down to the beach for a walk.

There were lots of rocks to sort through.  The Winchuck River is in the background.

After our walk we followed Barbara's recommendation for dinner at O'Halleran's - a steak/seafood restaurant.  A wonderful dinner was had by all followed by free birthday cake.  I've decided to milk the birthday perks all that I can.  Why not?  After dinner, we went to "Club 101" where Kat beat me 2 out of 3 games in Pool.  We had a fun time shooting pool, drinking a dark brew, listening to Country music and soaking up the ambiance which defines Brookings.

Back at our room, we checked out what was on TV and decided on a cop movie with Will Ferrell.  We laughed till we had to stop it to avoid having to change our underwear.  At commercial breaks, the two hosts showed outtakes which had us rolling.

Tuesday, March 26th - Leisurely morning with cold cereal, toast and coffee.  We drove into Brookings and picked up some pre-made sandwiches, drinks and sides for our afternoon hike.  Barbara, our host had told us of a "wonderful hike" which was relatively close to home.  We headed up the Winchuck River and turned onto a dirt/gravel road that was 4 miles of potholes lying in wait to destroy a careless driver's suspension.  Top speed was 15 MPH but we didn't mind - hey, we're on vacation.

We arrived at the trail head,  loaded up, set up our hiking poles and camera in hand - headed up the trail.  Sharing the path with sunlight streaming through 1000 year old Redwoods, a gentle breeze, the smell of the land waking from winter doldrum's, the cry of multitudes of birds in search of a date to bring to the Mating Dance, Rhodies and azaleas just beginning to bud, Trillium's in full bloom.  A nice stroll and picnic......so peaceful and relaxing.  It was so nice having the trail to ourselves and talk about pristine...you would be hard pressed to find a scrape of litter.

We hiked almost two miles and at the end, we were tired but refreshed.  Home to relax and sit on the deck until hunger forced us out and about.  We found a Chinese place and enjoyed the usual cuisine: heavy on the fried and sauced, but delicious.  The waitress refused to put a candle in my fortune cookie nor sing Happy Birthday in Chinese but we managed to get by.  The casino just over the border beckoned and Kat won $100 at her favorite game: Davinci Diamonds.  After going home we sifted through the movie selection and chose "Mama Mia".  Such a fun movie and a perfect end to a fun day.

Wednesday, March 27th - the birthday boy has landed!

Another great day starting at Denny's where I got a free "Grand Slam" breakfast after being I.D.ed and giving a thumb print to verify my birthday status.  We headed South into California and found a Pier to walk on, a picturesque lighthouse and then a wonderful beach just South of Crescent City.  We sat on a log and became one with the ocean.  B.P. dropped 20 points.  Watching dogs and people frolic on the beach, gulls skimming the waves, fishing vessels coming home to port laden with their holds filled with the catch of the day,  a crazy man surfing the waves, our eyes getting a workout and our necks cramping from the continual gazing into the Sun and swiveling to catch the 3 ring circus in front of us.  When it clouded up, we continued south until we got tired and then north to Crescent City again...this time we found a wonderful restaurant with a view of the bay and a whole bunch of lazy sea lions.  It was hilarious watching their antics while we ate clam chowder.  After a rest at home we went back to the 101 Tavern for pool and a hamburger, but Kat vetoed the idea when we found out it was Karaoke night and the singers were loud and off key.  So we spent the evening at home and enjoyed another movie and the sound of the waves.

We got up early to make the long drive home.  After we drove to Gold Beach for breakfast we took a short drive up the Rogue to check out the scenery and camping possibilities.  It was raining and foggy until we got to Coos Bay.  After a short and financially lucrative stop at the casino, we came out to find the sun shining for the rest of the trip home.

Thanks to Haley and Jim for watching house, home and pets.  We had a great respite!
